Ainge downplays finger injury - Nashville, Tennessee - Wednesday, 08/29/07 - Tennessean.com

"KNOXVILLE — After spending the offseason adding weight and strength, Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge couldn't help but shake his head at what happened on Monday: an injury to the pinky finger on his right (throwing) hand.

Ainge said he jammed the finger at practice while performing handoff drills, but UT Coach Phillip Fulmer said it occurred during a quarterback-center exchange. Regardless, Ainge may not practice the rest of the week but is still expected to start at Cal on Saturday."

Start of game week gives Vols energy - Nashville, Tennessee - Tuesday, 08/28/07 - Tennessean.com

"KNOXVILLE — Tennessee began preparations for Cal last week. But with game week officially here, there was an extra pep in the players' steps on Monday.

"I am ready for it, and I think the players are darn sure ready for it," Coach Phillip Fulmer said. "You get 23 practices and hitting each other and going through all that, and grading film and everything. I think everybody is ready to play a football game. I like the way this team has responded to what we've asked them to do."

No Need to Play the Season- Cal Has Won It All

ContraCostaTimes.com - Cal should be ready to face Tennessee

"Only 10 days until Cal football's season-opening win over Tennessee.

And then ...

The Bears' home crowd -- including the most season-ticket holders in program history at 40,262-plus -- goes wild.

And then ...

A national-television audience -- a sleepy one, at that, thanks to the 5 p.m. PDT kickoff -- reclassifies Cal as a bona fide national contender."

GREAT SPORTS

"KNOXVILLE -- There were smiles all around on Tuesday as Tennessee completed its third and final scrimmage of the preseason at Neyland Stadium.

Quarterback Erik Ainge continued to play extremely well and the offense again showed the ability to drive the football while mixing the pass and the run.

But a diagnosis on Prep All-American defensive end Ben Martin probably brought the biggest smile to coach Phillip Fulmer's face. The freshman from Cincinnati only suffered a bruise to his knee and no tear or structural damage."

To begin with the Vols are not among its members."

Not because the Tennessee safety is a senior. And not because he finished the spring as a starter.

It's because he still feels like an underdog."

"During the morning session of Thursday's two-a-day practice — which began at 7:20 a.m. Knoxville time — linebacker Rico McCoy leveled Foster in a short-yardage situation, prompting UT Coach Phillip Fulmer to call it "as good of a hit that's been out here in a year in a scrimmage."

The hit lodged the ball loose and energized the defense."

"KNOXVILLE — Ryan Karl had just one birthday wish: donning football pads and participating in practice.
The University of Tennessee linebacker did so by taking part in his first contact drill Monday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Battling a bad back that earlier this summer required a brace, Karl had missed the Vols’ first nine practices, including Saturday’s intrasquad scrimmage."

Mayo spreads influence throughout Vols roster
Mayo spreads influence throughout Vols roster

"KNOXVILLE — This is nothing new for Jerod Mayo.

Back in the day, he used to be a middle school football player in Virginia. He was better than everyone else and knew it. And when his teammates slacked off, he got in their faces and demanded better.

Now it's 2007. Now Mayo is a preseason first-team All-SEC linebacker at Tennessee, bigger, stronger, faster. Better in every way.

But when it comes to leading, he's still the same, which is good news for the Vols, who are now less than a month away from opening their season at California."
