  Draft Roundup

Friday, April 28, 2006

Safeties in numbers in this draft
Scripps Howard News Service: "Allen is one. He is a free-safety prospect who ran 4.39 seconds for 40 yards at the scouting combine despite suffering a dislocated left hip that kept him out of the second half of the Volunteers' season.

So he also is a prospect who has personnel executives around the league fairly split on what his pro prospects might be. Some teams consider him a considerable medical risk, while others are satisfied by what they've seen on magnetic resonance imaging exams.

Allen consistently has told teams he is ready to go, but some team doctors are telling their teams there is significant chance he will suffer the injury again.

'No matter what the injury was diagnosed to be, I was going to come back better than ever,' Allen said. 'That is the attitude that I have; I am not going to let anything stop me from reaching my dream of playing in the National Football League.'"
  Mahelona kicking back for now
Mahelona kicking back for now - The Honolulu Advertiser: "'You come home, nobody cares who you are,' said Mahelona, from Kailua, Kona. 'I don't talk about football here, I'm just hanging out with the boys.'"
Tennessee's top three schools may have first-round draft picks
thedailytimes.com - Tennessee's top three schools may have first-round draft picks: "NASHVILLE -- Jay Cutler is the quarterback from the worst football school in the Southeastern Conference. DeAngelo Williams rewrote the record book at Memphis, and Jason Allen is coming off a dislocated hip that ended his season prematurely.

What a trio. What are the odds?

Tennessee's top three universities haven't had a player taken in the first round of the same NFL draft since 1984, but Cutler, Williams and Allen likely will snap that drought Saturday and end a similar dry spell for each school."

SI.com - Writers - Overrated/Underrated (cont.) - Wednesday April 26, 2006 9:40AM:
Stewert Mandel's Overrated/Underrated list of NFL draft prospects.
"Underrated: Jesse Mahelona, Tennessee
After an absolutely dominant first season in Knoxville (he was a junior college transfer) in which he notched an SEC-leading 18.5 sacks, the Hawaii native's production dropped last year (eight sacks), but that doesn't mean he wasn't still a disruptive force. In fact Tennessee coaches consider him in the same class as such former Vols standouts as John Henderson and Albert Haynesworth. He's a big-play guy who gets his body extremely low to the ground, allowing him to streak into the backfield and drag down opposing ballcarriers or quarterbacks. I'm genuinely surprised he's so lowly regarded."

Blame Simms for loss of Clausen
Good Article.....
thedailytimes.com - Blame Simms for loss of Clausen: "In a time when Vol fans need a scapegoat now more than ever, look no further than Christopher David Simms -- NFL quarterback, All-American boy and walking cancer.

Basically, Fulmer had no chance of recruiting Jimmy. It would be like Screech landing Kelly on ``Saved by the Bell,'' or Urkel getting a date without turning into Stefan."

Jets RB Houston involved in car accident - NFL - Yahoo! Sports: "KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- New York Jets running back Cedric Houston was injured in a one-car accident late Friday night.

He was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he was treated for injuries that were not considered life threatening and released.

Charges were not immediately filed against the driver.

The Jets would not comment Saturday on Houston's injuries because he has yet to be examined by a team doctor."

Steelers still a fan of Jason Allen
Scout.com: Wexell: Daily Draft Report '06: "Word whipping around the rumor mill is that Tennessee defensive back Jason Allen has a serious problem. The dislocated hip he suffered at midseason, rumors allege, is a degenerative condition that’s caused two teams to reject him medically.

Hogwash say the Steelers, who remain keen on a player who was considered a top 10 prospect before the injury.

Scout.com: Vols rank No. 16 in BCS chase: "Coming off a 5-6 season in 2005, Tennessee doesn’t project to be a ranked football team heading into 2006. But the Vols are a top-25 team in at least one preseason ranking.

The folks at Collegefootballnews.com have the Vols penciled in at No. 16"

I don't see where Tennessee has done anything to earn this yet....

  Man in the Middle
Scout.com: Waiting for Josh: "For Tennessee’s offensive football team to improve on its woeful performance in 2005, several key players obviously must have big years:

Quarterback Erik Ainge must bounce back from an awful sophomore season.

Tailback Arian Foster must recover fully from ankle and shoulder injuries that caused him to miss spring practice.

Wide receiver Robert Meachem must become a consistent big-play threat.

Those three are obvious keys. A less obvious key for the Vols is Josh McNeil. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound redshirt freshman – rated the top center prospect in America as a senior at Collins (Miss.) High School "

And there have been the years where he has been cautiously optimistic.

Now, he's downgrading to just plain cautious. A 5-6 season, especially when your team was ranked nationally preseason in the top five as the Vols in '05, will do that to the best of coaches."

In fact, following Saturday's Orange and White spring game, he dodged the question every orange-blooded fan wants to know: Just how quick a fix is it coming off last season's 5-6 debacle?
'I don't have a crystal ball to be able to tell you that,' said Fulmer, asked if it was merely a one-year turnaround."

The result was a 34-7 victory for the Erik Ainge-led White team over Jonathan Crompton's Orange squad, but Fulmer was pleased with the overall performances of both quarterbacks, despite the defense's obvious success this spring.
