Tennessee football team's spring drills will be under the microscope Tennessee football team's spring drills will be under the microscope: "Usually for Tennessee, spring football is a time for key players to get healthy, while the young or unproven guys on the roster make a case for playing time the following fall.
But this isn't your usual spring for the Volunteers, who begin drills this week.
The Vols' spring workouts will be watched more keenly than usual - not only by the coaches, but also by the massive Rocky Top fan base following the team's first losing season since 1988."

Spring Preview 2006 Spring Preview 2006: "The biggest bounce-back team of 2006 should be Tennessee after a stunning 5-6 campaign. The Vols still have as much talent and athleticism as anyone in the country, and now it has David Cutcliffe coaching the offense; things can't be any worse as long as Erik Ainge plays like a seasoned quarterback. The opening four games aren't breathers playing Cal, Air Force, Florida and Marshall, but if they can get off to a 4-0 start before going to Memphis and Georgia, the confidence and swagger will be back. However, the potential is there for another disaster considering the great teams on the slate. Cal, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, LSU, and Arkansas will all spend time in the top 25, if not the top 15."

'I watched them play and knew what it was going to come down to,' Wills said. 'These guys had to be in shape.'"

Ranking the Tennessee Volunteers 2006 list of recruits Recruiting reversals disprove freshman class rankings thedailytimes.com - Recruiting reversals disprove freshman class rankings: "Recruiting is such an inexact science that some players who are deemed for supporting roles become all Southeastern Conference standouts. Case in point, the reigning defensive player of the year in the SEC DeMeco Ryans, who was only given a recruiting rating of two stars.
On the other hand, players touted as the next big hit sometimes become the next O.J. Owens, a five-star safety whose only claim to fame was a blocked kick as a Vol.
Tennessee's latest class may not be great on paper, but it's important to remember that the Orange have had highly-rated classes the last few years. What has that gotten them? A sub-.500 record and three new assistant coaches."
