Vols signee Myers fails to qualify academically Top College Football Venues1) Tennessee: Awesome, all of it. The stadium. The Volunteer Navy. The Orange Stoli shooters. The scene. The barbecue at Calhoun's. Gotta give it to them. The Vols do it right.
2) Texas: Best college town. Everything here is eye-poppingly spectacular and yet still charming at the same time.
3) Notre Dame: The campus and ND Stadium more than live up to the massive hype. Even a skeptic would have to smile. Every football fan should go just to check it out.
4) Wisconsin: The Camden Yards of College Football.
5) Florida State: A great place for a football weekend. Tallahassee is a great mix of folksy and cool, and games at the Doak are always a good show.
6) Georgia: I haven't been to Ole Miss for an actual game (only spring ball) so I'm defaulting this place as the best "scene."
7) Ohio State: The Horseshoe, the dotting of the "I" . . . the whole place just feels like big-time mid-western college football. (Growing up watching the great OSU-Michigan games on TV, I had to have one of these tradition-rich places on here, and OSU wins out because it is louder. Much louder.)
8) Florida: I think the Orange Bowl is louder and nastier, but just for the FSU game. This place seems to be like that every Saturday.
9) UCLA: Yes, other spots are more rowdy and have a more collegiate feel, but the place the Bruins call home truly has to be seen to be appreciated. The drive through Pasadena to the jewel that is the Rose Bowl is unmatched in the sport. It's stunning.
10) Nebraska: The see of Red deserves special recognition as perhaps the game's most gracious fans.
11) Washington: Rivals the Orange Bowl and the Swamp on the noisemeter, and Seattle is one of the most picturesque cities on the beat. Husky Stadium had a personality all its own. Or at least it did till the program fell off the map.
Just missed the cut: Michigan, Va. Tech, BC, Army and Oregon.
NCAA is fighting the desposition of Phil Fulmer....""Ronnie Cottrell filed this lawsuit in December 2002. From the inception of this case, plaintiff Cottrell (and later plaintiff Williams) have claimed that the University of Tennessee head coach Phil Fulmer was involved in a conspiracy to harm the University of Alabama and destroy the plaintiffs' careers," the motion said."

Mahelona Placed on 2005 Outland Trophy Watch List Alabama attys. again trying to depose FulmerI don't know if this issue is ever going to end.....
"IRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Attorneys for two former Alabama football coaches plan to renew efforts to question Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer for their defamation suit against the NCAA and others.
J. Michael Rediker, an attorney representing Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams, said they would ask Tuscaloosa Circuit Court Judge Steve Wilson to order Fulmer's deposition. A Tennessee court would have to issue the subpoena."

More on Sears and Mahelona. They should miss no playing time. This was also in the article....
"The violations were among at least 19 reports of secondary infractions in men's and women's sports the university has filed over the last year. None of them resulted in drastic penalties.
Most notably, six football players received free food at the Wendy's on Cumberland Avenue near campus in January and February and were ordered to repay a total of $70.44 for the value of the food."

Who's the best coach?Stewart Mandel's top 10 coaches going into 2005
#1 Pete Carroll
#6 Urban Meyer
#9 Phillip Fulmer "Fulmer's staff has taken its share of criticism, but that's partially because it raised the bar so high in the '90s. The Vols have broken out of the brief rut they hit earlier this decade, winning the SEC East last year and nabbing the nation's top recruiting class."
Apparently Jesse Mahelona and Aaron Sears were offered some help by a furniture store owner after their apartment burned down. There will be not penalties because the compliance team found out about it and took appropriate action

Colquitt could kick Chiefs’ punting woesFrom the Kansas City Star (free subscription) but I posted the whole thing
"The high, arching punts of rookie Dusty Colquitt were an offseason delight for the Chiefs. His kicks gave them reason to believe their punting problems of recent years are finished.
But the show doesn’t end when Colquitt’s kicks begin their journey back to earth. They inevitably do a dance that leaves returners staggering just to make a clean catch, much less bust loose for long yardage.
Colquitt’s kicks consistently baffled even veteran and sure-handed returners such as Dante Hall and Eddie Kennison. In offseason practices, both players fought Colquitt’s punts with all they had.
They had little success. Their attempts to field the kicks were a collection of drops, fingertip grabs, last-second lunges and belated efforts to merely get out of the way of the falling ball.
“Dante dropped one every day, and Dante never drops one,” coach Dick Vermeil said. “This is the first time he’s ever had problems. He told me he’s been using his game-day concentration and he was still having problems.”
That’s just the sort of mayhem the Chiefs had in mind when they drafted Colquitt near the end of the third round. One of the biggest reasons was returners’ inability to get a consistent grip on his punts.
“We saw it when we watched him in college,” said special teams coach Frank Gansz Jr. “A lot of returners were mishandling his punts. I stood under a few of them when I went to work him out. I’ve seen a lot of punts, but this guy’s punts move around a lot.”
It’s a new and exciting phenomenon for the Chiefs, who have gone through a dizzying collection of mediocre punters since Vermeil arrived in 2001.
It’s nothing new for Colquitt, who as Gansz indicated was tough to catch in college at Tennessee.
“I know that if guys are catching my punts and they’re not having much problem with them, there’s something in my technique that I need to tweak,” Colq"

UT a top-five defense?A collegefootballnews.com columnist rates Tennessee's defense top 5 in the nation: 1)Miami, 2) Penn State, 3) Alabama ???, 4) Tennessee,
5) Ohio State
"As a former Orlando man myself, I understand what you go through on your I-4 travels. And as frustrating as that road can be, what's more confusing to me these days is the Luther Vogle College Vols being the preseason darlings of everyone.
As a '99 Florida alum, I'm obviously not buying it, as I'm still remembering our, ahem, loss at Tennessee last year by a slight margin when we were coached by, ahem, "coach" Ron Zook. What's your take on Knoxville's Longest Yard Squad?
--Frank Taylor
Raleigh, N.C.
Frank:
If I remember correctly, your team isn't full of choirboys. In fact, your "coach" last year tried to pick a fight with a frat boy. So enough of the name-calling; let's let our friend Chrissie from Olympia handle that.
As for the Vols, you better believe they're national title contenders. They have the best defense in the SEC, and if quarterback Eric Ainge continues to progress under vastly underrated offensive coordinator Randy Sanders, UT will have the league's most balanced offense.
And as we've seen, any team that goes unbeaten and plays in the SEC has got to be a lock for the national title game. (Hey, Chrissie, that was a shot at Auburn fans).
The Vols have a potential 1,500-yard back in Gerald Riggs Jr. and five or six receivers who could play on any team in the country. So, yeah, in short, the Vols are the real deal.
The one game that could trip the run: at Notre Dame, Nov. 5. The Irish will have embraced Charlie Weis' philosophy, and with a little luck from the football gods, it'll be in the 30s with wet snow. Yikes."

"-- The floppy-eared ol’ hound dog gracing Tennessee’s new athletic logo does not yet have a name. He actually looks like a "Zeke," I reckon, but the smart money is on "Elvis."
-- If "Rocky Top" isn’t the worst college "fight song" of all time, it has to be a very close second."
